While the days of carrying heavy text books are not entirely extinct, open source media such as Wikipedia have significantly altered the research methodology used in schools and knowledge institutions. Now, organizations such as the World Bank are looking at such tools in order to disseminate and share its breadth of knowledge with the world. On March 23, 2009, author Andrew Lih visited the World Bank to discuss the release of his new book, History of Wikipedia. Joining Lih were Klaus Tilmes, Adviser for the World Banks Knowledge Strategy Group, Mike Trucano, Senior ICT Policy Specialist for the World Bank, and Manny Jimenez, Director for the World Banks East Asia Pacific Human Development Sector Department.

<releaseDate> Monday, March 23, 2009</releaseDate>

Images of Hope Promoting Cultural Industries in Africa

Arts and culture industries in developed nations can generate millions of dollars across many disciplines, whether it be music, video, or the visual arts, etc. But in many developing countries, gaining access to a burgeoning marketplace is far more challenging. On April 2, 2008 at the World Bank Headquarters, in Washington, DC, the Art Program and the Africa VicePresidential Unit cosponsored Images of Hope Promoting Cultural Industries in Africa to more closely examine the intersection between art, culture and economic development. The panel discussion focused on what defines African art and ways that artists might better collaborate with development economists to increase their visibility and gain greater access to the marketplace. Panel members from Africa Now! , a current African art exhibit at the Bank, discussed the increasing recognition of the role that art and culture play in development.

<releaseDate> Wednesday, April 02, 2008</releaseDate>

Social Accountability in Practice From Tools to Outcomes

Social Accountability tools can be applied to and influence policy and outcomes in number of different contexts, such as infrastructure, rural development and human development. In this presentation sponsored by the InfoShop at the World Bank Institute (WBI) on May 20, 2007, author Steve Waddell discussed his latest book, Societal Learning and Change. But the process of decentralization is fraught with controversy, and critical arguments of the process abound. In this event at the World Banks Washington headquarters on May 8, 2007, the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management (PREM) Network invited two eminent panelists to discuss the benefits and detriments of decentralization.

<releaseDate> Thursday, May 10, 2007</releaseDate>

Session 3 Leadership Development through Accountability and Results

Development institutions and politicians often toss around words like governance, accountability, and leadership. But it is not impossible for these banks to contribute, should they carefully consider their options—and indeed, they may play an important role in development and ethical investment for many nations. In this lecture series, sponsored by the Islamic Development Banks Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI), five universities were linked together over the World Banks Global Development Learning Network to hear from experts on the constraints, challenges, and advantages of Islamic banking.

<releaseDate> Tuesday, May 01, 2007</releaseDate>

2. Andean Countries Promoting Economic Opportunities and Social Networks

Even though indigenous people constitute around 40 of Latin Americas total population, they remain largely unaffected by development, and their level of poverty has stayed much the same over the last decade. In an attempt to understand why this has been the case, and to propose solutions, the World Bank assembled a report on Indigenous Peoples and Economic Opportunities in Latin America, leading up to a conference on its findings at Georgetown University on February 9, 2007. The conference was organized by the universitys National Resource Center for Latin American Studies, with the help of the Bank and the InterAmerican Foundation. Bjorn Soren Gigler, Research Fellow at Georgetown University, opened this plenary session on Andean Countries Promoting Economic Opportunities and Social Networks with a short discussion on the intrinsic social and economic capital of indigenous peoples, and how programs can enhance that capital to help them.

<releaseDate> Friday, February 09, 2007</releaseDate>

Promoting Local Entrepreneurship Globally and the Possibilities for Impact

How can the lessons of microfinance be applied to social enterprises?
