INFLUENCING POLICIES TO IMPROVE OUTCOMES THROUGH SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY APPROACHES: FIELD EXPERIENCES FROM INDIA

The brownbag lunch entitled, “Influencing Policies to Improve Outcomes through Social Accountability Approaches: Field Experiences from India” was held in at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C. on June 4, 2007. The event was chaired by Adolfo Brizzi, Sector Manager for the Bank’s South Asia region. Parmesh Shah, Lead Rural Development Specialist for the World Bank, introduced the topic with an overview of social accountability in the South Asia region. He commented on the integration of anticorruption to programs, as well as the "right to intervention" laws. Shah noted efforts to train all NGO employees in these matters before they enter the field, and research into methods for encouraging accountability.
