Title:
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MONTH |
| Date:
9/28/2009
- 9/28/2009 |
| “Human rights are women’s rights. Women’s rights are human rights. Freedom from violence is a human right.” -Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton, U.N. 4th World Conference in Beijing.
Domestic violence against women remains one of the world’s most challenging global crises. It is rooted in many facets of our daily lives; from governmental to legal, community-based to personal, it is an issue that merits more of the world’s attention. In conjunction with Human Resources representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank hosted its annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month on September 28, 2009. The event featured a speech by keynote speaker Ambassador Melanne Verveer of the U.S. State Department. Ambassador Verveer was joined by World Bank Managing Director Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, World Bank Vice President of Human Resources Hasan Tuluy and Shirley Siegel, Director of the IMF’s Human Resources Department. It was moderated by Tina Gry Tinde, Diversity Advisor of the Inter-American Development Bank.
