Title:
THE CELLPHONE AND THE MATTRESS: TECHNOLOGY AND ACCESS TO FINANCE |
| Date:
2/5/2007
- 2/5/2007 |
| Across the world communication technologies such as cell phones are being used for information and financial exchange at an unprecedented rate. Communication technologies are quickly gaining more users in developing countries than in developed ones. In Africa, the “mattress” is a metaphor for how informal finance remains the predominant way people move and save their money. In such an environment, the potential of communication technologies to bridge the gap between communication technology users and formal financial institutions is huge. But the way forward is fraught with issues. In Africa, limited access to banking services for majority populations, prohibitive regulations, and a lack of money, education, or credit history all illustrate difficulties facing poor, rural, and remote populations. |
