 DESCRIPTION
The Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE) brings together academics, policy makers, representatives of multilateral and bilateral agencies, research institutes, civil society organizations, students, and journalists, and thus provides an excellent opportunity to foster exchange of knowledge and understanding of development issues. The 2008 edition of the Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE) took place in Cape Town and was co-organized by the World Bank and the National Treasury of South Africa. The conference gathered nearly 500 participants over two and a half days. The theme of the conference was People, Politics and Globalization.

Sunil Kant Munjal, Chairman of Hero Corporate Services Limited, said that an average Indian can today spend twice as much as he or she could spend in 1985, and in 20 years will be able to spend four times more than today, thanks to rapid economic growth. The country has experienced an annual growth of nearly 9% over the past few years, yet it still has 200 million people living in poverty. Munjal noted that the poor will not wait for two generations to profit from economic growth.
