| The World Bank’s Development Economics Unit (DEC) launched a new lecture series, DEC Lectures, on April 21, 2005. The first set of lectures, held on that day, featured presentations by three distinguished and innovative economists: Avinash Dixit, John Sutton and Peter Lindert. The theme of the lectures was “New Findings in Development Economics.” The presentations offered cutting-edge research and shed new light on pertinent topics in development economics, with the aim of informing Bank staff of the latest findings in the theory and practice of development.
The second lecture in the series was delivered by John Sutton, Sir John Hicks Professor of Economics and Convener (Head) of the Economics Department at the London School of Economics. His address was entitled “Competing in Capabilities: An Informal Overview.” Sutton discussed the notion of ‘capabilities’ (revealed and underlying) with regard to industrial development. He presented an analytical framework of competing capabilities, aiming to identify the key factors that lead to success or failure. Michael Klein, Vice President of the Private Sector Development Unit at the World Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Chief Economist for IFC, served as discussant for the lecture, and Alan Winters, Director of the Development Research Group within DEC, chaired the session.
