| On January 25, 2004 Madelyn Blair, former World Bank division chief and current President of Pelerei, Inc., facilitated a workshop at World Bank headquarters in Washington on storytelling as a tool for planning and problem solving. The purpose of the workshop was to demonstrate how storytelling can be used to help a community develop not only by sharing knowledge and ideas within that community but also by creating a forum for open exchanges across communities. Participants shared stories with the group and explored together the lessons that could be draw about the uses and impact of storytelling. Blair then focused on storytelling as a practical tool for use in development projects and related problem solving. Pietronella van den Oever, Senior Social Scientist for the World Bank Institute’s Environment Division, moderated the event. During the question and answer period that followed Blair’s presentation, participants raised questions regarding the World Bank’s role in storytelling and how Bank staff can appropriately employ storytelling in their work.
