| On April 4, 2005 the World Bank’s Public Information Center, the InfoShop, in collaboration with the Mosaic Foundation, hosted a discussion with Queen Noor of Jordan. The event was moderated by Walter Isaacson, CEO of the Aspen Institute. Malea Abdel Rahman, Vice Chairperson of the Mosaic Foundation, provided introductory remarks.
Since becoming the Queen of Jordan in 1978, Queen Noor has sparked initiatives in Jordanian national development in the areas of education, culture, women’s and children’s welfare, human rights, conflict resolution, and environmental conservation. She is also actively involved with international organizations, such as the United Nations, and has played a major role in promoting international exchange and understanding of Middle Eastern politics, Arab-Western relations, and humanitarian and women’s issues.
During the discussion with the Queen, Isaacson and audience members raised a number of interesting questions. Queen Noor addressed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and prospects for a peaceful resolution and explored the question of determining the role of the United States in Middle East politics. Additionally, the Queen addressed issues such as the changing role of women in the Arab world and the importance of education in enhancing the quality of life of women in the Middle East and throughout the world.
