On June 8, 2005, the Operations Evaluation Department (OED) of the World Bank hosted its second annual Good Practice Award Ceremony for selected evaluated projects, implementation completion reports (ICR), and Country Programs, recognizing strong Bank performance in program design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation that contributed to positive development outcomes. The event took place at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC was attended by the World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz and Bank Managing Director Shengman Zhang.
Ajay Chhibber, Acting Director-General of OED of the Bank congratulated the winners of the awards and noted that although OED is often perceived as the bearer of bad news, the annual award ceremony symbolizes that the department also brings good news. Chander Mohan Vasudev, Chairman of the Board’s Committee on Development Effectiveness, further emphasized the importance of good self-evaluation by the Bank and the crucial role of OED as a source of credible and independent evaluation.
Zhang thanked the awardees for exemplary work and noted that monitoring and evaluation is important, and expressed his gratitude to OED for rewarding good work in that category.
In his congratulatory remarks, Wolfowitz underscored the importance of recognizing outstanding Bank projects and programs as a way of fostering good ideas and practices. He said that it is important to make time to recognize strong performance.
The ceremony was chaired by Patrick Grasso, Adviser at the OED, and the awards were handed out by Soniya Carvalho, Laurie Effron, and Kristin Hallberg, Lead Evaluation Officers at OED.
