Employment is an accepted and important part of the growth process. But while there has been much attention on the process of creating jobs, knowledge of job quality, segmentation, and the link to poverty reduction remains limited. On June 19, 2006, the World Bank’s Poverty Reduction group sponsored a daylong workshop on the topic of “Rethinking the Role of Jobs in Shared Growth” at the Bank’s headquarters. Louise Cord, Sector Manager for Poverty Reduction at the Bank, chaired this panel on “Good Jobs, Bad Jobs, and Economic Performance.”

Samir Radwan, from the Economic Research Forum, discussed quality of jobs in the Middle East and North Africa region. He commented on who takes bad jobs, how they hurt the economy, and the methods that attempted to raise job quality. Radwan asked if international labor standards are compatible with economic growth. Martin Rama, a World Bank Lead Economist, responded to Radwan with comments about segmentation within the informal sector. Rama discussed interventions to improve this state, including pension plans.

Audience members questioned the panel about private sector solutions, health impacts of poor jobs, and other quality issues.
