 DESCRIPTION
Washington D.C.—On February 17, 2009, the World Bank presented Water Week 2009, an annual event featuring three days of panel discussions and lectures from various sectors. The discussions covered a variety of issues, from the impact of the financial crisis on water development to the affects of the food price crisis in low income countries. The event was a collaborative effort between the Water Anchor and the Water Sector Board. This year’s Water Week events enabled participants to exchange experiences and knowledge in helping the World Bank achieve solutions to clients most affected by the water crisis.

Thursday, February 19, 2009, the River Basin Management Seminar took place, featuring a diverse panel of specialists from the World Bank’s regional offices and international water organizations. The session was prefaced by David Grey, Senior Water Advisor of the South Asian and African regional sectors of the World Bank. In this discussion, panelists exchanged river basin management initiatives from their respective regions.

The first presentation was given by Rashid Latif, Minister of Water Resources of Iraq. He discussed the current state of water resources in the country, factors affecting resources, and factors related to innovation of integrated water systems. Latif discussed listed the climate and nature of Iraq, political relationship with neighboring Turkey and Syria and the country’s water resource infrastructure. Lead Water Resources specialist and Nile Program Coordinator of the Africa Region Barbara Miller shared a synopsis of the Nile River. Miller delved into aspects of poverty, hydrologic vulnerability, climate change and hydro-political issues surrounding the area. She offered an overview of the Nile Basin Initiative, discussing its accomplishments, future steps and lessons learned.

Christopher Bosch, Country Sector Coordinator of the World Bank’s Europe and Central Asia Region and Joop Stoutjesdjik, Lead Irrigation Economist of the World Bank’s South Asia Region presented a collaborative study on the Amu Darya and Syr Darya River basins of the Europe and Central Asia. Bosch offered a view on development issues surrounding river management issues, in addition to new approaches to improve current river basin management systems. Stoutjesdjik concluded their presentation by discussing a current project focused on improving water resource management in the Syr Darya River and water flow into the Aral Sea. This study, he said, illustrates how an integrated approach and infrastructure institutions can help reach resolutions for river basin management operations.
