On February 23-25, 2009, the Environment and Social Development Department (CES) of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) held its annual Sustainability Knowledge Week in Johannesburg, South Africa. Practitioners from the Africa, MENA (Middle East and North Africa) regions gathered to exchange knowledge and practice experience in sustainability and climate change.
In this session, CES Chief of the Climate Change Unit Shilpa Patel introduced a short video demonstrating the scientific impacts of climate change in Africa and the Middle East. This session focused on the IFC’s role in tackling the issues certain countries face in the wake of climate change problems, such as drought. Patel introduced Alan Miller, Principal Project Officer of the Climate Change Unit who outlined the various groups addressing climate change control and mitigation. Miller discussed the aspect of financial risks to climate change, potential business ventures and the tools necessary to build localized, regional strategies.
Miller’s presentation was followed by a game of Climate Change Jeopardy, testing the new knowledge disseminated to the event’s participants. The game was hosted by Makena Mwiti, CESGM Operations Officer and Rodrigue Djahlin, Operations Officer of CAFAF.
