On February 23-25, 2009, the Environment and Social Development Department (CES) of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) held its annual Sustainability Knowledge Week in Johannesburg, South Africa. Practitioners from the Africa, MENA (Middle East and North Africa) regions gathered to exchange knowledge and practice experience in sustainability and climate change.
The session began with an interview conducted by the CES group with the Program Manager for Sustainable Knowledge Network in Indonesia. The conversation explored some of the most pressing sustainable issues in Indonesia, of which governance, land use and agriculture, and forestation are especially important. The center projects house emissions and forest fires will be of concerns in the future, but may also lead to develop carbon market development and alternative financial needs.
Concluding the event was the session “Sustainability at Work,” which allowed participants to collaborate with one another and examine strategies relating to advisory work and investments with potential for investment. A “Sustainability Assessment” exercise, this enabled participants to present their views on incorporating social and environmental sustainability as well as taking into consideration factors such has risk and potential opportunities. After each table presented their findings, the event concluded with summarizing statements by unit directors.
