| On May 20, 2009, authors of the book” Two Billion Cars: Driving toward Sustainability” held a presentation at the World Bank to discuss their research concerning the global oil and auto industries in the United States. Deborah Gordon, Policy Consultant of Transportation, Energy and Environment and Daniel Sperling, Professor of Engineering and Environmental Science and Policy at the University of California Davis were featured discussants, and Ranjan Bose, Senior Energy Specialist of the World Bank provided impressions of the book. The session was facilitated by Andreas Kopp, Lead Transport Economist at the World Bank.
Gordon and Sperling discussed the overall findings of their studies, citing that the U.S. succeeds other nations as the world’s leading emissions generator. The low-carbon fuel standard, transportation policy and carbon taxes were subjects for major discussion throughout the session. Gordon identified the role of the US and the BRIC countries in transforming the world’s transportation policies, while Sperling illustrated the subject by describing the state of California’s latest development in the field. The session featured a lively question and answer session with participating attendees.
