Format, Agenda and Presentations

The program consists of a 3-day workshop and two parallel field visits. The duration of the program is 10 working days in China.

Workshop
The workshop sessions are designed to be interactive and includes presentations and discussions by both Chinese and African officials and policy advisors, as well as a limited number of international development practitioners. Each session will have two presentations - one by a senior Chinese official or policy researcher and one by an African official or expert, and a panel with two discussants (one Chinese and one African), followed by discussion/Q&A. The African participants are expected to take an active part in the event and may be requested to serve as panelists/discussants to share their own challenges and experiences.

Field Visits
The workshop program is followed by field visits. To maximize the learning experience and impact, two parallel field visits (participants will be divided into two groups) are arranged during the program period. These field visits are intended to:
• broaden and deepen participants’ understanding of the historic, social and cultural context of China’s economic reforms and developments;
• provide a unique opportunity to interact with practitioners at the local level on how they have transformed their local economy to sustain a shared growth that benefit local population with an impact on poverty reduction; and
• allow participants to witness and evaluate the long-term impact on the ground of China’s strategies and policies. Each group’s itinerary includes a visit to one of China’s inland provinces, and to one province in the dynamic coastal region. Destinations for the field visits are: Group A: Jiangxi Province and Zhejiang Province
Group B: Guangxi Automous Region and Guangdong ProvinceIn inland provinces (Guangxi and Jiangxi) the field visits will focus on poverty reduction and rural development projects that have a direct impact on poverty reduction; while in coastal provinces (Guangdong and Zhejiang), the field visit will focus on issues related to investment (infrastructure, Township and Village Enterprises, private sector development) and opening up (trade, Foreign Direct Investment and Special Economic Zones).Click here ( PDF) to see the field visit program.

The program concludes with a half-day wrap up session in Beijing. An optional cultural program is organized on the final day of the program.
