- 5/21/2008 |
| On May 21st, 2008, the World Bank Group hosted a panel to present and discuss the release of the Transport Business Strategy for 2008-2012. The event was chaired by Jamal Saghir, currently the Director of Energy, Transport and Water, in the Sustainable Development Vice Presidency (SDNVP) of the World Bank and Chair of the Energy and Mining Sector Board, Transport Sector Board, and Water Sector Board. Saghir opened the event by explaining that the transport sector has committed over 42 billion dollars in loans since 1996, when the transport strategy was officially endorsed. Saghir said their role was only growing, as the bank had been developing new business strategies to invest in other forms of transport. Sanghir presented an overview of key strategic points including transport’s crucial role in public health, disease prevention, the environment, and the implantation of new initiatives to reduce the negative effects of geographic isolation. |
