JOHN
A. DIXON was Lead Environmental Economist at the World
Bank Institute (WBIEN) when he retired in December,
2002. From
1981 to 1990 he was at the Environment and Policy
Institute, East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii and
joined the World Bank in 1990, serving in the Latin
America region, in the central Environment Department,
and in the World Bank Institute, where he led the
Environmental Management program.
He
has extensive field experience in East and Southeast
Asia and Latin America. His research and writing focus
on applied economic analysis of environmental impacts,
parks and protected areas (both terrestrial and marine),
natural resources management, and environmental indicators.
He was a member of the core team that prepared the
1992 World Development Report, Development and the
Environment.
His
undergraduate degrees are in Economics and Chinese
from UC Berkeley, and his MA and Ph.D. in Economics
are from Harvard University.
He
has published many books and articles on valuation
and speaks and teaches widely on the application of
environmental economics to environmental issues. His
most recent books are Economic Analysis of Environmental
Impacts (with L.F. Scura, R.A. Carpenter and P.B.
Sherman) published by Earthscan Publications, London,
1995, and Economic Analaysis of Investment Operations
(Belli et al., 2001); he also led the team in preparing
Expanding the Measure of Wealth: Indicators of Environmentally
Sustainable Development (1997) and Five Years After
Rio: Innovations in Environment Policy (1997).
Today,
he divides his time between Kailua, Hawaii and Bethesda,
