Hazard
Risk Management in Europe and Central Asia October
26 - 28, 2004, Merit Antique Hotel, Istanbul, Turkey
Background
A
number of devastating natural disasters that have
occurred since 1997 have strongly increased the pressure
for the formulation of a new policy approach towards
proactive hazard risk management. As a reflection
of this shift, the World Bank Europe and Central Asia
Region from support of the Bank Hazard Management
Unit has developed a regional strategy in the area
of hazard risk management. The Strategy seeks to apply
modern risk management approaches to address natural
disasters in the ECA region, both to raise awareness
and understanding of the ECA countries' exposure to
natural hazard risks, and to introduce a pro-active
framework for mitigation and prevention.
Objective
of the Workshop
The
objective of the workshop is twofold: (i) based on
findings of the ECA regional strategy, discuss the
implementation challenges and opportunities of pro-active
disaster risk management framework, and (ii) exchange
and share country experiences of good practices in
selected areas of disaster risk management.
The
three days workshop includes two days discussions
and one day field trip. The first day focuses on cross-cutting
and cross- country strategic issues, the second day
discussions will cover more technical aspects of hazard
risk management, with references to specific hazards,
the countries of the region are most vulnerable to,
such as floods, landslides and earthquakes. (see detailed
agenda below) .
