Topic 1
Local government authorities take action to address HIV/AIDS
Assignments for Topic 1

Review the Commentary for tips and examples relating to Tools and Assignments

First, review the following tools in the Handbook:

  • Tool 5.5 Evaluation: Rapid Assessment of LGA action in key areas: Survey (pages 103-108)
  • Tools 2.5 and 2.6: Assessing LGA Roles and Responsibilities (pages 55-59)

Assignment 1: Independently, or with a small team from your municipality fill in Tool 5.5. This should take less than 1 hour to complete. For each category (i.e. Informed by an understanding of local realities and trends, Leadership, Internal HIVAIDS policy, etc.) list one strength (something that you had given a score of 3, 4, or 5) and one weakness (something that had received a score of 1 or 2). From this list identify 2-3 areas that you would like to make a priority for your municipality, and suggest how this might be accomplished.

Assignment 1.1: Review and discuss Tool 2.6, and prepare a short summary of 1 institutional strength and 1 institutional obstacle that the team has identified.

Presentation on these assignments might include:

  • A summary of any ongoing activities to address HIV/AIDS in the municipality
(e.g. what department is coordinating these activities, and what level of leadership has been involved?)
  • A brief description of the findings from Tool 5.5, with emphasis on next-steps
(e.g.what are the strengths and weaknesses and identified priorities?)
  • An overview of any institutional opportunities and constraints that have been identified (Tool 2.6), and how one might address these issues.
