The
WBI-CESI learning program, entitled "Traditional
Structures in Local Governance" is designed to
explore innovative ways to create more participatory
sub-national governance by looking at the role traditional
structures have, or could have, in local governance
for the improvement of local development outcomes.
More specifically, this learning program will:
- Clarify
the role and functions of traditional structures
for local development, including the way they contribute
to local public finance, public services and infrastructure,
conflict resolution, land and natural resource management,
etc.
- Explore
existing forms of formal and/or informal relationships
in selected countries between traditional and modern/state
structures.
- Consider
theoretical and practical consequences of enhanced
cooperation between the modern state and traditional
structures in local governance (i.e. transparency,
accountability, social inclusion issues).
