Dr.
Lahiri is the Chief Economic Adviser at the
Ministry of Finance and Company Affiars, Government
of India. Dr. Lahiri was a Leverhulme Visiting
Fellow at the University of Birmingham during
1981-82. He was a visiting faculty member at
the Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi, during
1978-80 and at the University of Georgetown
during 1987-88. Dr. Lahiri was a Director of
the United Bank of India and a member of the
Industrial Finance Corporation of India, New
Delhi; National Institute of Bank Management,
Pune: and Southern Area Local aboard of the
Reserve Bank of India, Chennai. Further, he
was also the Chairman, Public Expenditure Reforms
Commission, Government of Punjab, and non-official
Member of the State Planning Commission in the
rank of a Minister of State, Government of Sikkim.
He has also been a member of several committees
set up by Government and the Reserve Bank of
India for advising on issues such as fiscal
responsibility legislation, deregulation of
the petroleum sector, ways and means advances
from the RBI to the States, and floor price
of steel. Public lectures and his publications
on economics apart, he has also published on
Indian electoral behaviour, and has often been
consulted by the print and television media
on economy and on election related matters.
He holds a Ph.D. and a a Master's degree from
Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi,
and a Bachelor's degree from Presidency College,
Calcutta University.
