Peter Yanev, President and co-founder of EQE, has over 30 years of experience in earthquake and structural engineering and risk management. He co-founded EQE International in 1981 and grew the company to 750 professionals, before selling EQE in 2000 and leaving in 2001. Currently he consults independently in his areas of expertise.
Mr. Yanev holds degrees in Civil/Structural Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley (1968) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1970).

Serving as Chairman and as President of EQE (www.eqe.com), he led the company to it's preeminent position as the largest provider of technical services, software products and information for the quantification and management of property, operational and business risk. He started and directed most of the company's 30 offices throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Pacific. His clients included most Fortune 100 companies, leading financial and insurance companies, and governments throughout the world. He also directed EQECAT (www.eqecat.com) to a position of a leading developer of catastrophe software and a consultant to the property/casualty and financial services industries.

Mr. Yanev has conducted and/or directed 90 field investigations of earthquakes, and over twenty large windstorms and floods throughout the world. He has managed and participated in numerous projects in North America, Europe, Asia (and particularly Japan), South and Central America, and the Pacific.

Mr. Yanev has consulted in the evaluation, analysis, design, testing, and retrofit of existing buildings, utility systems, and industrial facilities since 1968. He has performed a great deal of work on power, communication and other lifeline facilities, industrial complexes, high-technology and manufacturing facilities, oil refineries, and commercial buildings. He has worked extensively on portfolio risk analysis and risk abatement programs for corporate clients, including more than half of the world's largest 100 companies as well as many smaller companies and organizations. Mr. Yanev is an originator of EQE's Seismic Experience DataBase, an exhaustive inventory of structural and equipment performance in earthquakes. His many research projects in earthquake engineering, seismic safety, risk analysis, and damage prediction have been sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Geological Survey, Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. State Department, the World Bank, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations, and other international agencies.

Mr. Yanev has worked as a consultant to the insurance industry throughout the world since 1973. In this capacity he has helped companies assess their catastrophe exposure and improve their individual risk underwriting capabilities. He has worked with senior management, underwriters, loss control engineers and claims adjusters in helping them develop the expertise needed to effectively and efficiently manage their exposure. This includes all aspects of risk underwriting, risk transfer and risk securitization. Mr. Yanev is also involved in the development and proper use of catastrophe modeling software for the insurance and capital markets industries. He is a frequent lecturer to major insurance companies, brokers, and industry groups around the world on the effects of natural disasters and the lessons learned from past earthquakes.

He has published extensively in the field of earthquake engineering and risk assessment and reduction, including the best-selling book Peace of Mind in Earthquake Country. He is involved in public and professional education through numerous television programs, a column in the San Francisco Chronicle, and as a visiting Professor at Stanford University.
