Peter
Yanev, President and co-founder of EQE, has
over 30 years of experience in earthquake and
structural engineering and risk management.
He co-founded EQE International in 1981 and
grew the company to 750 professionals, before
selling EQE in 2000 and leaving in 2001. Currently
he consults independently in his areas of expertise.
Mr. Yanev holds degrees in Civil/Structural
Engineering from the University of California,
Berkeley (1968) and the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (1970).
Serving
as Chairman and as President of EQE (www.eqe.com),
he led the company to it's preeminent position
as the largest provider of technical services,
software products and information for the quantification
and management of property, operational and
business risk. He started and directed most
of the company's 30 offices throughout the Americas,
Europe, Asia and the Pacific. His clients included
most Fortune 100 companies, leading financial
and insurance companies, and governments throughout
the world. He also directed EQECAT (www.eqecat.com)
to a position of a leading developer of catastrophe
software and a consultant to the property/casualty
and financial services industries.
Mr.
Yanev has conducted and/or directed 90 field
investigations of earthquakes, and over twenty
large windstorms and floods throughout the world.
He has managed and participated in numerous
projects in North America, Europe, Asia (and
particularly Japan), South and Central America,
and the Pacific.
Mr.
Yanev has consulted in the evaluation, analysis,
design, testing, and retrofit of existing buildings,
utility systems, and industrial facilities since
1968. He has performed a great deal of work
on power, communication and other lifeline facilities,
industrial complexes, high-technology and manufacturing
facilities, oil refineries, and commercial buildings.
He has worked extensively on portfolio risk
analysis and risk abatement programs for corporate
clients, including more than half of the world's
largest 100 companies as well as many smaller
companies and organizations. Mr. Yanev is an
originator of EQE's Seismic Experience DataBase,
an exhaustive inventory of structural and equipment
performance in earthquakes. His many research
projects in earthquake engineering, seismic
safety, risk analysis, and damage prediction
have been sponsored by the National Science
Foundation, the U.S. Geological Survey, Federal
Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. State
Department, the World Bank, the International
Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations, and
other international agencies.
Mr.
Yanev has worked as a consultant to the insurance
industry throughout the world since 1973. In
this capacity he has helped companies assess
their catastrophe exposure and improve their
individual risk underwriting capabilities. He
has worked with senior management, underwriters,
loss control engineers and claims adjusters
in helping them develop the expertise needed
to effectively and efficiently manage their
exposure. This includes all aspects of risk
underwriting, risk transfer and risk securitization.
Mr. Yanev is also involved in the development
and proper use of catastrophe modeling software
for the insurance and capital markets industries.
He is a frequent lecturer to major insurance
companies, brokers, and industry groups around
the world on the effects of natural disasters
and the lessons learned from past earthquakes.
He
has published extensively in the field of earthquake
engineering and risk assessment and reduction,
including the best-selling book Peace of Mind
in Earthquake Country. He is involved in public
and professional education through numerous
television programs, a column in the San Francisco
Chronicle, and as a visiting Professor at Stanford
University. Currently he is an advisor to the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
and President of the Northern California Chapter
of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.
He is a frequent commentator on natural disasters
to the electronic media, including CNN, ABC,
NBC, CBS, BBC, Fox, Fuji, CBC and others.
