Overall Aim

This activity is the first phase of World Bank Institute's capacity enhancement program on Rural Poverty Reduction in Northeast Brazil.

The overall aim of this workshop is to initiate a multipartite dialogue on rural poverty reduction strategies in Northeast Brazil with rural development stakeholders. Moreover, it provides a platform for the exchange of experience on rural development in Northeast Brazil. This VC is intended to set the stage for an on-line discussion to provide participants with an opportunity to interact directly with one another, and thus, to foster the development of a community of practice. Focusing on the experience gained in Ceara and Pernambuco, the workshop will raise participants' awareness on the lessons learned from sustainable rural development programs of local and international development partners (e.g. Banco do Nordeste, DFID, UNDP).

Content

This preliminary workshop showcased the lessons learned from rural development programs in the Northeast of Brazil with a focus on poverty reduction. Panelists reviewed approaches selected, assessed successes and failures, and provided an outlook on challenges ahead. In particular, panelists discussed the following questions:

  • What are the core components of the rural poverty alleviation strategy of your government/institution?
  • What key lessons can be learned from the on-going programs carried out to implement this strategy (e.g. successes, constraints, failures)?
  • Which aspects of existing programs should be given priority (or may even require a restructuring) to generate a more significant and more rapid impact on the alleviation of rural poverty
