William Maloney received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkley with a specialization in development economics, labor, and econometrics, after which he was an assistant professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He joined the World Bank in 1995, first as country economist for Mexico, and subsequently, as Senior Economist in the poverty reduction and economic policy division.
