The
workshop, organized jointly by the World Bank’s
Europe and Central Asia Poverty Reduction
and Economic Management (PREM) Unit, the World
Bank Institute’s Poverty and Growth
Program, and the PREM Gender and Development
Group, took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, November
5-6, 2003. Participating countries included:
Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Kyrgyz
Republic, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The
objective of the workshop was to review and
exchange experience on the mainstreaming of
gender in national poverty reduction strategies
in CIS-7 countries; to identify obstacles
and challenges countries face in mainstreaming
gender while designing and implementing their
strategies; to derive lessons for the future
and help formulate a shared view of next steps
for each country.
Country
delegations comprised from national and local
government officials, representatives from
civil society including NGOs, women's machineries,
academics, and donor representatives. By the
end of the workshop, each group from these
countries developed a national plan of action
for priority steps to promote attention to
critical gender issues in their national poverty
reduction strategy process.
