In terms of sharing and learning from ongoing practical work and experiences, the case studies were a crucial part of the workshop.
In response to the call for submitting proposals for case studies, we received close to 400 submissions from all over the world, covering all ecosystems, and representing a wide spectrum of approaches and experiences. We were faced with the very difficult job of having to select 20 submissions to be written up and presented at the workshop.
The 20 case studies, representing 19 countries (there were 2 cases studies from India), were divided among the Workshop Themes as follows:
- Theme 1: Burkina Faso, Gambia, India 1, Nepal, Thailand
- Theme 2: Barbados, India 2, Russia, Tajikistan, Tanzania
- Theme 3: Brazil, Jordan, Pakistan, Philippines, Zimbabwe
- Theme 4: Ecuador, Honduras, Indonesia, Laos, Sudan
In terms of regions, the case studies were divided as follows:
- Sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Gambia, Sudan, Tanzania, Zimbabwe
- East Asia: Indonesia, Lao PDR, Thailand, Philippines
- South Asia: India 1, India 2, Nepal, Pakistan
- Europe & Central Asia: Russian Federation, Tajikistan
- Middle East: Jordan
- Latin America & Caribbean: Barbados, Brazil, Ecuador, Honduras
The 20 case studies address a number of important issues, of which the most important are: Biodiversity, Conservation, Extension (and training), Gender, Multi-ethnicity, Protected Areas, Traditional Knowledge, Tourism, and Water Resources Management (and irrigation). For a list of the key terms identified for each case study see the case study Information Sheets.
An overview of the 20 case studies, giving the titles by countries, is available
below. A list of all case study presenters are available
here.
These are the case studies, listed by country. Each case study is accompanied by an Information Sheet that contains important analytical, background and contact information. A few case studies are available also in French and Spanish, or are accompanied by additional material. All files are available for viewing and downloading (Word and Powerpoint formats, size under 100 Kb unless otherwise noted):
Several of the case study submissions that unfortunately could not be included in the workshop have subsequently been made available on this website, in a searchable database (see Case Archive), as have the above 20 case studies. They provide a wealth of information and experience, and we encourage you to access them.
