Bonnie J. McCay earned her Ph.D. at Columbia University's Department of Anthropology in 1976 and has been teaching at Rutgers the State University of New Jersey since 1974, currently as Professor in the Department of Human Ecology and as Associate Director of the Ecopolicy Center.

Her ethnographic research has been with coastal communities in the North Atlantic region, particularly Newfoundland, Canada and the Mid-Atlantic U.S. Author of "Oyster Wars and the Public Trust," (1998) and co- editor of "The Question of the Commons: The Culture and Ecology of Communal Resources" (1987), she has participated in a multidisciplinary effort to revive the argument that "common property" is not necessarily tragic in its economic and environmental implications. She is president-elect of the international Association for the Study of Common Property (IASCP), the professional group dedicated to the topic of how people do in fact manage communal resources and the question of whether and how they can do so effectively.
