Biosketch: ELINOR OSTROM

Elinor Ostrom is Co-Director of the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis; Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Institutions, Population, and Environmental Change; and Arthur F. Bentley Professor of Political Science at Indiana University. Her major research foci have revolved around the impact of diverse institutional arrangements on the incentives facing individuals in different action situations. She is the author of Governing the Commons (1990) and Crafting Institutions for Self-Governing Irrigation Systems (1992); co-author with Larry Schroeder and Susan Wynne of Institutional Incentives and Sustainable Development (1993), with Roy Gardner and James Walker of Rules, Games, and Common-Pool Resources (1994), and with Robert Keohane of Local Commons and Global Interdependence (1995).

She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has served as President of the International Association for the Study of Common Property. She has been an advisor to USAID and other governmental and nongovernmental agencies.
