Activity 1: Acceptable Use Policy activity
Module 2: Student Use of the Internet & Acceptable Use Policies

Overview & Instructor Notes

The objective of this activity is to consider what constitutes an appropriate Acceptable Use Policy for schools, teachers and students, governing how computers and the Internet are used, as well as how such a policy might be implemented.

This activity is a good opportunity to discuss roles at various levels:

  • Which decisions regarding acceptable use should be made at the regional level and the local level?
  • Which decisions should be made at the national level?

The discussions may also lead to some debate about what are appropriate teaching strategies for using the Internet and how would an acceptable use policy effect them. For example if a group of participants decide that materials should be downloaded from the Internet by the teacher and the students only use those materials, how does that fit with constructivist teaching as described in the ICT and Education reform module?

Some participants may be unwilling to give up "control" in the classroom and that should be discussed as the role change required of teachers when using ICTs is a critical component to be understood as the policy and strategic plans are developed.

This activity can take between 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete.

Instructions

  1. With the other participants, reach a consensus on the description of the school for which you will develop an Acceptable Use policy.

  2. As a group decide the two things that you think are most important to include in an Acceptable Use policy for a school.

  3. Determine how you would implement the Acceptable Use Policy.

  4. With other participants, reach a consensus on what should be included in an Acceptable Use Policy at the regional or national level and how it would be implemented. What statements, if any, should be made in a national ICT policy regarding Acceptable Use Policies?

  5. Share the results of each group and have discussion as necessary. End by turning the resulting draft AUPs to the working group for further development.
