Grant Purpose:
The purpose of the Grant was to complement funds committed by other donors to finance a Conference on Leadership Challenges of Demilitarization in Africa. The purpose of the conference was to serve as a forum for discussion on the political, economic, social, and philosophical ramifications of demilitarization.

Grant Activities:
The grant supported the Leadership Challenges of Demilitarization in Africa and particularly air and ground transportation, honoraria and per diems, administrative and planning, and the publication of conference proceedings and conclusions.
Participants presented best practices of demilitarization in Costa Rica, Haiti, and Panama. The Conference also served the purpose of organizing a working group which would support demilitarization in Africa.
The Conference took place on July 22-24, 1998 in Arusha, Tanzania.
