Niger Delta Community Foundation
Grant Purpose:

The Niger Delta Community Foundations Initiative seeks to forge a new platform for development collaboration in the Niger Delta. Conflict sensitive development in the Delta requires a collaborative model that breaks down the incentive structure for violence. Acknowledging past failures, the oil companies, communities, various levels of government (state, local, and Niger Delta Development Commission) and other stakeholders have all expressed interest in building a new model for sustainable community development in the Niger Delta. The Niger Delta Community Foundations Initiative aims to contribute to this overarching goal, with the objective of creating a sustainable, multi-donor platform for donor collaboration that is sensitive to conflict dynamics and firmly rooted in community-owned approaches and capacities.

The grounding premise of the planned work in the Niger Delta remains that improved accountability and enhanced trust in public institutions is the cornerstone for peace and development in the region. The Niger Delta Community Foundations Initiative aims to promote such trust and accountability through a new model for partnerships among key stakeholders in the region, piloting an innovative framework for effective coordination and collaboration among local communities, civil society actors, private sector firms, bilateral donors, local governments, state governments and the Niger Delta Development Commission.
Grant Activities:

The project supports strengthening the institutional capabilities and grant-making functions of the newly established Niger Delta Community Foundation and the creation of local community development organizations in the Delta, along the lines of models successfully deployed in Akassa (Bayelsa state) and replicated in the LGAs of Opobo-Nkoro (Rivers state) and Eastern Obolo (Akwa Ibom state). In addition, the project will provide grants to community development organizations.
