Description

Climate change is one of the major challenges facing the world. Many countries have already been impacted by climate change and this has affected their development as a result of adverse impacts on sectors such as agriculture, water, human health and tourism. It is clear that a concerted effort in addressing development under a changing climate is needed and recognized by many development agencies, countries, NGOs and community organizations. But a major challenge on moving forward is the access to the knowledge and the capacity to move from knowledge to action. World Bank Institute (WBI) initiated a pilot program in 2009 focused on increasing the knowledge on climate change in youth in developing countries that ended up involving about 300 youth (in 17-35 year range) and 16 countries. Given the demand from youth in many developing countries, there is a clear need for concerted effort to widen scope of reach, scaling up such an effort by including other partners. As part of the demand, capacity building training is planned for ECOWAS countries to create awareness, knowledge and understanding of climate change through the use of e-learning material, role plays, e-discussion to encourage peer-to-peer learning, develop and maintain youth networks and other youth oriented material.

Objective

To empower youth to become actively involved and be champions for actions on climate change in their countries or communities. More specifically, the program aims to: • Create awareness, knowledge and understanding of climate change through the use of e-learning material, role plays, discussions and other youth oriented material • Empower youth to become actively involved in action on climate change • Encourage networking between youth organizations from various developing countries and link them with youth organizations in developed countries – essential for a global issue like climate change.
