The course will emphasize the economic and development implications of trade policy and negotiations (at the unilateral, multilateral, or regional fronts), while also examining the international trade architecture and institutional and practical aspects of policy making and negotiations. The course sessions will feature lectures, practical applications, extensive use of case studies, and student participation. Participants will also hear from trade policy experts at lunchtime talks and panel discussions. The course will be held on April 30-May 18, 2007, with the first two weeks on the Columbia campus in New York City, followed by a week at the World Bank in Washington, DC. The mandatory tuition fee is $5,700 per participant. Additional accomodation charges apply for those participants requiring it through SIPA and WBI.
As interdependence among nations has grown, it has created new and complex public policy challenges that can only be addressed by highly skilled, well informed policymakers. It is to meet these needs and to increase the quality of the WBI-trade learning materials and its impact on policies and international negotiations among client countries that the World Bank Institute in cooperation with the International Trade Department of the World Bank has partnered with the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University to jointly develop and offer this state-of-the-art, comprehensive, three-week long trade policy course.
