The World Business Environment Survey (WBES) Interactive Dataset
The World Business
Environment Survey (WBES 2000) is a survey of over 10,000 firms in 80
countries that examines a wide range of interactions between firms and
the state. Based on face-to-face interviews with firm managers and owners
in late 1999 and early 2000, the WBES generated measurements in such
areas as corruption, judiciary, lobbying, investment climate and the
quality of the business environment. In the data analysis, these business
climate constraints are related to specific firm characteristics and
firm performance. For downloading the draft report 'Voices of the Firms',
which presents the data, explanations and results from the analysis,
click on the pdf icons on the left hand column. For the user agreement
on the care required in the use and interpretation of the data and materials,
please read details below.
In order to start
the interactive webtool, select the individual
or multiple question option, depending
on what kind of comparative charts and tables you want to generate:
| |
OPTION
1: INDIVIDUAL QUESTIONS - This option allows the user
to generate several types of charts (stacked, bars, pies and radar)
on the question of interest for all the selected countries. In
addition, the user will be able to analyse results by firm characteristics
and compare them with regional and income category averages. In
this option, however, multiple questions cannot be selected for
comparative purposes. To select this option, click here

OPTION
2: MULTIPLE QUESTIONS - This option allows the user to generate
a number of charts (one for each selected country), displaying multiple
questions simultaneously. The advantage of this option is that you
can perform within-country comparisons for multiple issues. For
the country of interest, the charts display the percentage of firms
that rate the selected issues as problematic. This approach therefore
allows for direct comparison across questions, notwithstanding their
original rating scale. At the same time, this multiple question
option will provide fewer types of charts than if you select option
1. To select this option, click here |

more information on the WBES project, please contact Daniel Kaufmann
or Andrew Stone (Astone@worldbank.org) or visit the WBES
page. The WBES interactive data webtool was designed by Dmitry Samorodkin
and Andrey Lysenko with assistance from Arseny Malov and Massimo Mastruzzi,
under the supervision of D.
Kaufmann.
The WBES project was overseen by G. Pfeffermann, D. Kaufmann, H. Kharas,
S. Khemani. A. Stone was the task manager, and G. Batra a principal
researcher. For details about all the collaborating partners involved
